Surf GPS I very much like the idea of a surfboard with built in devices that can help surfers to communicate with their fellow surfers, know where they are by using a GPS and a radio beacon that is build in the board. Lenart Studios did the design.

I am not a surf dude, but to my regret I am almost sure this again is one of this design studies that never comes to the market. It just to small. Are you to switch it on with your big toe?

Geocaching hits Symbian OS

After using my Palm devices for paperless geocaching for years and years it is time for a change. I am gradualy switching to Symbian series 60 and searching for software that I can use to keep my data. At least I am trying…

It not as easy as it sounds, I know now. As you might have read I think Palm is superior for keeping data in whatever form, but my Nokia E61i is far superior in connectivity. In this case I in fact need the data part, on my symbian device.

AFTrackFor Symbian there are two programs now that you could use to keep you geocaching data: AFTrack andSmartGPX the recent updated and free SmartGPX.

I have some opinion about both of them, but I will get back to you with that later.

Do you have other choices for me? Tell me!

PocketPC TomTom maps installation

My brother is far from stupid, but he did not succeed installing maps for TomTom on a device running Pocket PC. So he asked me to help him with it and I dropped by. It took quite some time but I didn’t get the job done.
But who’se fault is it? Is it the sequence of the TomTom installation, am I to stupid or is Pocket PC an OS that is just incomprehensible? I think a combination of the first (30%) and the last (70%).

The

Acer

, with build in GPS, has an official TomTom Navigator 5 with Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg) installed from the Western Europe maps pack (with all the original codes).
This works fine, but although the installed map was visible on the 1GB SDcard, it could not be used. Is there any way to have a map you payed for on your device in an easy way?

It’s official now! I do NOT like Pocket PC / Windows Mobile.

GPS Passion – Short News Round

Trimble introduced the Juno ST Handheld, a Windows Mobile 5.0 GIS/GPS device to collect data while being on the road.

Trimble also introduced a bigger brother for the Juno ST, the Nomad. As the Juno ST is a low(er) budget device, the Nomad doesn’t go under US$ 1700, but holds a 2MP camera and a heavy duty battery and is equipped with Bluetooth.

Dan Hanttula of SmartPhone & PocketPC did a Hands-On already.

GalileoAs the European GPS competitor Galileo project doesn’t seem to get out of its problems, they are seeking the solution in a partnership with, yes, GPS… But they forget about one of the main goals of the project: getting less dependent from the US military controlled GPS.

Q1: Will it be ready in 2012? ;-)

When you are sick and tired of using your navigation device, put your car at a car park and switch your Thinkware’s iNAVI G1 to karaoke mode. Sing along and drive on 20 minutes later. Where has the good old power nap gone?
