Nokia N95 Update
The long awaited firmware update (v12.0.013) to the Nokia N95 phone has arrived, installed and tested by several.
You can get it HERE at Nokia

Only looking to the GPS part of this update, the reactions are quite positive overall. I don’t own a N95, but just like all of you I like to know what is going on.

  • the look of Nokia Maps has changed
  • the fix time has indeed reduced from 4 to 15 minutes (!) to a maximum of a minute or two to four.
  • it has the “hotly anticipated” Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) feature(, but this still has some kind of memory leakage, it seems)

So in short we could conclude that the worst problem, the fix time, has been repaired. I indeed call it repaired, because I think this is something that was faulty from the beginning and shouldn’t have been.
This update is worth it!

PGA allows SkyCaddie

I forgot to mention in my post of last week that the SkyCaddie is officially approved by the PGA, the Professional Golf Association, at least in the UK.

I am not sure about the American situation, or even the situation in continental Europe, but the SkyCaddie was not only used in the UK PGA, but is even a sponsor for the coming two years.

As part of the deal, the state-of-the-art SkyCaddie has been given the green light to be used in the competition, which could open the doors to a golfing revolution.

We’ll see!

iPhone Google Maps again

I have been reading the 2nd review of GeoThought’s Peter Batty of the iPhone Google Maps application with a big smile on my face. You can read the passion out of his story, next to his, it is again thorough and with a critical eye.

The conclusion of his (somewhat lenghty ;-) ) review is that Apple and Google (especially the latest) have still some work to do. Go HERE to read the whole story.

Nokia N95 is getting GPS upgrade

Nokia did take action against the GPS problems of its “all-singing, all-dancing” (Mobile Today) Nokia N95. A firmware upgrade is on its way.

The problems have been divers, including the locking of the device while turning on and turning off of a bluetooth headset and even crashing. But most important to us, as passionate GPS lovers, are the solution for the GPS problems.

The time of a ‘fix’ would be cut down from 4 to 15 minutes(!) to 30 seconds, which is also quite fast, for a cold or a hot fix. A fix is the time the gps device needs to know where it is, to say it quite simply.
Next to that the assist-GPS software will ‘help’ the GPS with it’s fix with the help of the GSM network.

I am sure there will be much more news to tell when the upgrade comes out.
