After in fact stopping support for PDA’s and smartphones it is very likely that TomTom will bring a iPhone version of its navigation software to sell to customers, Reuters tells us. The Dutch navigation device maker is not yet telling when it comes to the market, but it is expected that it will be on the same date that the iPhone 3G will be for sale.

Quest for GPS software for Mac – part 1

Geo_Journal_screen

Switching from one computer to another isn’t always easy. But finally switching platform from Windows to Mac OS, well, that’s a – well thought through – revolution!

The search for holy grail ;-) software is not over, but there is one flaw in the ocean of Mac software: gps and/or geocaching related software. I don’t say there is no software for Mac, but it is not as widespread as Windows software and some types of software aren’t just there (yet).

Magellan (who?) is forgetting about it totally (but about a lot of other things too!) at all and Garmin is starting to support Mac since a few months with different programs that are still in beta (BUT being worked on! :-D)

The most recent Mac OS X I did find (read: a few days ago) is GeoJournal. A program that makes it a lot easier to get you geocaching waypoints and cache info to your devices.

It can make the (by geocaching.com) delivered waypoints from GPX to Garmin, Magellan, Lowrance or even TomTom Navigator 5.x and can export to CacheMate, that is available for Palm for years and years now, and for Windows Mobile about 1 year I say from memory.

For Mac users that are into geocaching GeoJournal is for sure worth the try.

New iPhone with GPS and 3G

iphone-new

After quite a winter sleep (and some other things) this is big enough news to at least do my utmost best to make a new start: Engadget comes with the news that the expected new iPhone will have 3G and – YES – GPS!

Some specs:

  • slightly thicker than the first gen iPhone

  • the back will not be metal, but black plastic (hhhmmm)

  • new haptic feedback on virtual keys

  • 3G, third generation gsm technology

With the old specs it never really got my attention, but now Steve, now I am watching!

Magellan or Garmin?

Magelan Sportrak MapI have been a Magellan user since I started using handheld GPS devices. I started with the Magellan Sportrak Map and from there went to the Sportrak Color. Not because that was my direct choice, but because there were cracks in the case of the Sportrak Map caused by bad quality plastic or to strong fixing of the screws. After a short the Dutch importer wanted to sell me a Sportrak Color for a reduced price. Very nice! This Color has made quite some kilometers and I was very happy with it.

I have always been sure that the quality of Magellan was great, but their service not really, for sure in Europe (French style). Still I decided to buy the new eXplorist 600, last summer.

And here my unhappiness started to show. Great to have USB instead of a serial connection with all its COM-problems, but a file system that doesn’t work like I want it. Maps still NO new versions, after years and years now.

Now there is a new series for a few months now, the Triton series. The device looks great, the name is good, has flashlight and bluetooth build in (not all versions!) but I am not going to buy it. You know why?

  • no European version available
  • no European maps available
  • no Mac OSX support (later more on this!)

Is there more? What do you think?!
