Owning different digital camera’s, including the new Sony Alpha 700, and with a passion for GPS it is always nice to read about new developments on photography and geotagging.

Engadget comes with a story about GeoTate (in coop with Rakon), that presented a device on the PMA 08 that processes the geographic (read: GPS) information right away, instead of afterwards on a computer. It puts the location stamp to the file from for instance a GPS that is connected to the flash shoe of the camera. That flash shoe has to be ready to put that information through.

It will be, different than before, become a multi purpose shoe in that case.

Can’t wait till there will be a working version for my Alpha 700. Depending on the price. ;-)

Nude dancer signal

I could help, but I did laugh loud. The adult entertainment is said to be a very innovative industry ( and I believe that), just like the GPS industry. GPS Magazine brings the news that Nudar.com brings both worlds together with POI data on strip clubs, nude beaches and more for you GPS.

Just like Fletch I do warn you the American way: WARNING: that site contains nudity and is NSFW. (but I really have NO idea what the last means. I did look it up. Now I know ;D )

Nokia becoming a mobile GPS power house?

nokiaperson.jpg

We already knew that the Finnish Nokia was getting more and more into GPS on the go.

Today Nokia anounced that they have an definitive agreement to aquire NAVTEQ, one of the two biggest geographical data providers (read: mapping firms), just a few weeks after TomTom did aquire TeleAtlas, the other big company.

NavTeq will keep working independent, but as a Nokia Group company and just like TeleAtlas will keep providing old costumers with maps:

By joining forces with NAVTEQ, we will be able to bring context and geographical information to a number of our Internet services with accelerated time to market. We also look forward to maintaining and enhancing the services and support provided to NAVTEQ’s existing and future customers.

Navizon: virtual GPS software for iPhone and more

Navizon iPhone Screen

The last few days the was a lot of talking about the Navizon Peer-to-Peer Wireless Positioning Software. The iPhone ready software is available since a week or two. This is great news! GPS support one way or another should have been built-in from day one to my opinion. The software for Blackberry, Symbian and other OS have been on the market longer.

Navizon is a positioning system that triangulates signals from Wifi access points and Cellular towers. It is based on a collaborative database where users who have a GPS device can contribute data on Cell towers and Wifi APs locations that will let other members of the community simulate a Virtual GPS on their phone.

This means that the area you are driving or walking with the Virtual GPS software must be covered by the data in the Navizon database. Interesting to know is that you can earn money with collecting data for Navizon. Now you are listening, right?! ;-)

Navizon data

You can try the software for 15 days for free, that you have to pay $ 24,99 (€ 18,57)

HERE is how to get Google Maps with Navizon. I am not sure whether this will work for every device.

Can wait to give it a try. And I will and tell you about it!
