Apple iPhoneThis is my wishlist for a Apple iPhone v2.
I am not hindered by any deep knowledge on the iPhone (v1) (because it is not available in Europe [and if it would be it would not work]), but have my eyes and ears open.

Apple’s biggest mistake is to put Google Maps on its iPhone without GPS support and Steve Jobs calling it something like a killer app and better than every version before. Is that right?

I would love it to have:

  • built-in GPS, but the possibility to use a better external GPS would be great too!
  • Google Maps with connection to internal or external GPS to you choice
  • reasonably priced software for paperless geocaching (CacheMate for iPhone?)
  • reasonably priced software for compass, location and strength of GPS signal (Java?)
  • 3G mobile broadband like UMTS or HSDPA
  • backup of the above with GPRS

Did I forget GPS related features for the iPhone v2? Tell me in a comment.

Geocaching hits Symbian OS

After using my Palm devices for paperless geocaching for years and years it is time for a change. I am gradualy switching to Symbian series 60 and searching for software that I can use to keep my data. At least I am trying…

It not as easy as it sounds, I know now. As you might have read I think Palm is superior for keeping data in whatever form, but my Nokia E61i is far superior in connectivity. In this case I in fact need the data part, on my symbian device.

AFTrackFor Symbian there are two programs now that you could use to keep you geocaching data: AFTrack andSmartGPX the recent updated and free SmartGPX.

I have some opinion about both of them, but I will get back to you with that later.

Do you have other choices for me? Tell me!

PocketPC TomTom maps installation

My brother is far from stupid, but he did not succeed installing maps for TomTom on a device running Pocket PC. So he asked me to help him with it and I dropped by. It took quite some time but I didn’t get the job done.
But who’se fault is it? Is it the sequence of the TomTom installation, am I to stupid or is Pocket PC an OS that is just incomprehensible? I think a combination of the first (30%) and the last (70%).

The

, with build in GPS, has an official TomTom Navigator 5 with Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg) installed from the Western Europe maps pack (with all the original codes).
This works fine, but although the installed map was visible on the 1GB SDcard, it could not be used. Is there any way to have a map you payed for on your device in an easy way?

It’s official now! I do NOT like Pocket PC / Windows Mobile.

Nokia N95 update is a GO!

Nokia N95 Update
The long awaited firmware update (v12.0.013) to the Nokia N95 phone has arrived, installed and tested by several.
You can get it HERE at Nokia

Only looking to the GPS part of this update, the reactions are quite positive overall. I don’t own a N95, but just like all of you I like to know what is going on.

  • the look of Nokia Maps has changed
  • the fix time has indeed reduced from 4 to 15 minutes (!) to a maximum of a minute or two to four.
  • it has the “hotly anticipated” Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) feature(, but this still has some kind of memory leakage, it seems)

So in short we could conclude that the worst problem, the fix time, has been repaired. I indeed call it repaired, because I think this is something that was faulty from the beginning and shouldn’t have been.
This update is worth it!
